Cathy O'Neil is a data scientist and author of the blog mathbabe.org. She earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from Harvard and taught at Barnard College before moving to the private sector, where she worked for the hedge fund D. E. Shaw. She then worked as a data scientist at various start-ups, building models that predict people's purchases and clicks. O'Neil started the Lede Program in Data Journalism at Columbia and is the author of Doing Data Science. She appears weekly on the Slate Money podcast.

Although quite interesting in general, it's extreme focus on the US did become rather obnoxious after some time, with the relevancy of many topics for EU countries bordering zero, due to the data protection laws active here. It's nevertheless an easy read with some nice idea, especially if you have never tackled the topic before.
While the book touches on the very important question about the reliability of the algorithms that increasingly govern all our daily lives, unfortunately it does not go much beyond newspaper levels. This is not to say that its messages should be ignored but based on its title and the background of the author I had hoped for more profound insights into actual shortcomings. All in all the book does not deliver more than a well written essay on the topic.
This is a place to go if you want to acquaint yourself with arcane world of mathematical models for different uses. It is scary how such a model can give shelter to all sorts of unpopular decisions. The book is written in a very good style, nothing pretentious and the writter is very modest in its displayal of mathematical and statistical skills. Always a good measure of problematics described without pomposity. I would say one of the better popular finance books in last years. But humanistics students beware - this is a world without personal opinion, judgement or displayal of maturity. This is a world where you serve to the model or go to obscurity.
